'Election can be delayed, can't defer schedule announcement'

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda has said there is no possibility to defer the announcement of the election schedule but the general polls can be delayed if all parties want to do so.

He made the statement at the Election Training Institute (ETI) in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Tuesday.

When asked about the use of Electric Voting Machines (EVMs) in the polls, the CEC said: “EVMs are going to be used in a limited scope.”

Previously, on Monday, Jatiya Oikya Front, in a meeting, requested the Election Commission to announce the election schedule after the dialogues between political parties and the government end.

Jatiya Oikya Front, which is led by Gono Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain, also demanded that the Election Commission not use EVMs in the 11th general polls.

The schedule for the 11th parliamentary election, which is scheduled to be held in December, will be announced on Thursday.
