The investigation into irregularities allegedly found during the recently held Khulna City Corporation polls is progressing at a steady pace.
The probe, which entered its third day on Thursday, could continue for two more days, saidprobe body chief Khondokar Mizanur Rahman, also joint secretary of the Election Commission secretariat.
The EC earlierinstructed the committee to submit its report by May 27.
Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, Mizanur said: “The hearings on Tuesday and Wednesday concerned people involved with three polling centres which were shut down.”
He added: “On Thursday’s hearing, we are trying to figure out what happenedthere onelection day. Information gleaned from the probe will be reported to the Election Commission who will take the final decision.”
Meanwhile, Md Yunus Ali – who served as a returning officer during the polls - said: “We spoke to presiding officers, assistant presiding officers, polling officers, and on-duty police officers assigned to the aforementioned three polling centres.We also talked to the executive magistrate assigned in that particular ward.”
Voting in the three polling centres inthe wards 24 and 31 has been rescheduled for May 30, 2018.Candidates for both reserved and general wards will be able contest there.
The probe committee, formed by the Election Commission, arrived in Khulna on Monday to investigate allegations of irregularities in the Khulna city polls.
The committee, comprised of Election Commission Joint Secretary Khondokar Mizanur Rahman, Deputy Secretary Farhad Hossain, and Senior Assistant Secretary Shah Alam, initiated its investigation on May 22.
