SUST sees no class due to low presence; BCL man held

Despite opening after nearly two months, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) yesterday witnessed no class or examination owing to the unusual low presence of the students.

On November 20 last year, the SUST authorities shut the university as its one student died following a clash between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League.

When asked, SUST Proctor Prof Dr Himadri Shekhar Roy said classes or examinations were not held due to low turnout of the students.

On the first day, police arrested a BCL activist named Doippayan Dutta Rumon, a student of anthropology department, from the campus around 11am although earlier another activist namely Ruman was arrested in the incident.

Sources wishing not to be named said some BCL activists led by SUST Vice-President Anjan Purkayastha tried to make a showdown on the campus despite having a ban on any political gathering there.

Additional police have been deployed to prevent further untoward situation, said Jalalabad police station OC Akhtar Hossain.

Foyez Mortuza, a 4th year student of public administration department, opined panic situation prevailing among the students caused low presence.

On the other hand, extra security measures were taken in front of the dormitories.

On Saturday, sharp weapons were found from the dormitories when SUST authorities and police jointly searched Shahporan Hall, Bangabandu Hall and Syed Mujtoba Ali Hall in the presence of executive magistrate, Kamal Hossain.
