Mathematics manifests itself in everyday life

Mathematics manifests itself in everyday life, from simple counting to complex research, philosophy and human thought process, opined speakers at the Dhaka (north) regional Olympiad competition yesterday.

The event was organised as part of the 6th National Undergraduate Mathematics Olympiad 2014 at the Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET) campus in Gazipur.

Addressing the event Co-convenor of the National Undergraduate Mathematics Olympiad Committee Professor Anwar Hossain said: “Without mathematics, development of science and technology is impossible.”

Echoing the same sentiment, DUET student Nasiruddin said: “Maths not only helped develop my skills but also enabled me to help others. That is why I am participating in the event.”

Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) student Khadija Akter Mousumi said, mathematics is important in all aspects of life as it helps resolve various problems.

A total of 140 undergraduate students from 16 universities attended the competition. The participating universities were DUET, Jahangirnagar University, NSU, EWU, Uttara University, IUBAT, IUT, IUB, Ananda Mohan College, Prime University, Bhawal Badre Alam Government College, Mymensingh Agricultural University, Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University, City University, Islamic University and International University.

Top 10 students were selected, after a written test, to compete in the final Olympiad which will be held at the Dhaka University on December 12 along with other regional winners.

The winning students are Imran Islam, Mehnaz-e-Ferdous and Md Eusha bin-Hafiz of Jahangirnagar University, Md Tariqul Islam of Uttara University, DUET students Md Koushik Islam and Md Mehedi Hasan Shahin, NSU students Anika Tasnim and Saeed Ahmed, Badhan Chandra Sarkar from Ananda Mohan College and IUBAT student Syed Mohammad Iqbal.

Convenor of the Olympiad committee Professor Munibur Rahman Chowdhury, DUET Vice-chancellor Professor Mohammad Alauddin, President of the Olympiad committee Professor Shirajul Haque, and mathematics professor of Jahangirnagar University Professor Layek Sajjad Andallah were also present. 

Professor Alauddin in his remark said: “Maths make people persevering, attentive and calculative. Maths reigns supreme.”

With financial support from the AF Mujibur Rahman Foundation, the undergraduate Olympiad is being organised by Bangladesh Mathematical Society. The Dhaka Tribune is the media partner this year.
