Dormitory of the MC College finally got its previous form.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid inaugurated the dormitory, which has been reconstructed, yesterday 28 months after the hall was set on fire during clashes between the activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League and Islami Chhatra Shibir.
Professor Nitai Chandra Chanda, principal of the college, presided over the inaugural function.
“The dormitory would be brought back to its previous form was our promise, and today we have fulfilled our promise,” said education Minister.
Mentioning MC College Hostel as century-old, the minister said: “Its our national heritage. To rebuilt it, the length of the building has been increased and we had to allocate more money to finish the construction work.”
The education minister said people, who are involved in setting ablaze in the hostel, will be brought to book.
“We have already discussed the matter with home ministry, they will take appropriate measures against them.”
On July 8 2012, about 200 rooms of the dormitory were gutted as Shibir men allegedly set those on fire during clashes.
Sources said after the incident the Education Engineering Department took initiatives to rebuilt the hostel.
Nazrul Hakim, assistant engineer of the EED, Sylhet said: “Around Tk400 crore was spent for the total reconstruction work which started on December 5,2012.”
“We have built block 1, 2, 3 and 4, and each block would accommodate 56 students. We have also followed the design of ‘Srikanta Hostel’ to reconstruct the three blocks,” he said.
Among others, Awami League Organising Secretary Misbah Uddin Siraj, ex mayor of Sylhet City Corporation Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran and Vice-Principal of the college Hayatul Islam Akanji attended the function.
