Provost of Doctor Mohammad Shahidullah Hall of Dhaka University (DU) Professor Azizur Rahman has been freed by the university's Acting Proctor Amzad Ali at 12:45am after three hours of confinement by agitated hall resident at his office around 9:30pm.
The provost was confined because the students demanded library facilities and tightening of security. They also chanted slogans demanding the removal of the provost and issued an ultimatum of three days for his termination.
Campus sources said the Provost Azijur Rahman misbehaved with hall unit Bangladesh Chatra League (BCL) president Aminul Islam and General Secretary Miraj Ahmad when they went to the provost's room at 8:00 pm to discuss security issues in the hall.
Right after the meeting, the provost was confined in his room.
Campus security issue arose after general students of the hall claimed that a car entered the hall premises at 3:00am on Friday and moved around suspiciously, but the hall security officers did not know or do anything about it. A fourth year student of the hall said they have been demanding better security and library facility from the provost for a long time without avail.
The provost was contacted several times but has not responded. DU Acting proctor Professor Amzad Ali said the situation is under control now and a security officer has been suspended, accused of negligence.
