UGC warns private universities of illegal campuses

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has cautioned students and guardians about the illegal campuses of private universities.

The university governing body published an advertisement in a national Bangla daily yesterday, giving the names of UGC-approved private universities and their statuses, and asked students to be careful about taking admission in certain universities.

The advertisement came a day after this year’s HSC results came out.

Listing the names of 79 private universities and their campuses, the UGC cautioned students about four private universities. It said there was a conflict between two groups of trustees in IBAIS University, and the groups had filed cases against each other.

About Prime University, it said its 2/A/1 Darus Salam Road campus had been approved by the Supreme Court, and the rest were illegal.

The UGC also said the newly-approved Global University, Bangladesh in Jhalokathi had not contacted with either the UGC or the Education Ministry after getting approval.

About Darul Ihsan University, it said there were conflicts among its trustees and there were four factions of them.

On the other hand, some universities approved by the UGC are running academic activities on illegal campuses.
