DCs allege MPs’ interference in teachers’ recruitment

Deputy commissioners have alleged that local MPs interfere in recruitment of teachers and other related issues.

They made the allegation at a meeting with the education minister and primary and mass education minister at the conference room of the cabinet division. The meeting was part of a three-day deputy commissioners’ conference that started in Dhaka yesterday.

After the meeting, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid told reporters that the deputy commissioners had pointed out the interference of MPs in teachers’ recruitment and other issues.

“I have told them that we have taken steps to recruit qualified teachers,” he  said, adding that no one would be recruited without a National Teachers’ Recruitment Certificate (NTRC).

Nahid also said an MP can be the president of four colleges’ governing bodies. “We have set up a private commission for the recruitment of teachers and we will centrally recruit teachers,” he explained.

“As per the proposal made by the DCs, a committee headed by an additional deputy commissioner will be formed to work for overall education,” he said.

The deputy commissioners also raised the issue of the shortage of teachers, the minister said. “It is true that there is a shortage of teachers,” he concurred.

He added: “We have recruited 150 headmasters in government schools and the recruitment of 50 principals for government colleges is in process.”
