Zafar Iqbal demands public hearing

Renowned author and educationist Muhammad Zafar Iqbal demanded a public hearing for the “question paper leak” of the ongoing Higher Secondary Certificate examinations.

He made the demand yesterday at a sit-in programme that was organised at the Central Shaheed Minar as a protest against the leaks.

“This type of incident is unacceptable. The authority has to take immediate steps to stop the leaking of question papers. Otherwise we will continue our protest,” he said.

“A public hearing should be held in this regard. People from all walks of life – students, teachers and guardians – should be allowed to express their views in order to reach a solution,” he added.

“The names of the culprits will be disclosed once this is investigated. I have evidence regarding the question paper leak and I also have the names of the people who are involved with it,” he stated.

Writer Anisul Hoque, Buet Professor Mohammad Kaikobad and Liberation War Museum Trustee Ziauddin Tarek Ali expressed solidarity with the protest. The programme ended around 12:30pm.

“Six sets of question papers should be prepared for the examinations so that the students need to study the entire book,” said Anisul Hoque.

Zafar Iqbal and his wife Yasmin Haque started the sit-in programme at the Central Shaheed Minar around 8:30am.

On May 23, he had announced that a protest against the question paper leaks would be staged soon.

A number of civil society members as well as students and teachers of several institutions attended the sit-in programme. Younger school students and children were also seen joining the protest.
