Law enforcers are yet to arrest any of the culprits who were involved in the killing of Rustom Ali Akond, a leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League Rajshahi University unit.
BCL RU unit, however, enforced a daylong strike at the university yesterday protesting the killing of Rustom Ali, also a fourth year student of political science department, and demanding immediate arrest of the killers.
No classes and examinations were held at the university due to the strike.
Under the banner of BCL RU unit, a mourning procession was brought out on the campus in the morning. BCL leaders and activists as well as general students took part in the procession.
Meanwhile, RU BCL president Mizanur Rahman Rana and general secretary Touhid-al-Hossain Tuhin at a press conference yesterday announced strike at the university for an indefinite period.
They also announced that they will form a human chain and launch a signature campaign at Shaheed Miner of the university today in support of their demand. ABM Rejaul Haque, officer-in-charge of Motihar police station, said they were investigating the incident and trying to arrest the killers of Rustom.
A BCL source told the Dhaka Tribune that some BCL activists were involved in the killing of Rustom and they went into hiding soon after the incident.
Rustom Ali, acting general secretary of BCL Shaheed Suhrawardy Hall unit, was shot dead in his room at the hall on Friday. No case was filed in this connection till filing of this report.
Rustom was buried in his family graveyard at Chak Narayan village under Sadullahpur upazila of Gaibandha district yesterday. His first namaz-e-janaza was held at Rajshahi University at 8:00pm on Friday. After janaza, his friends and relatives burst into tears.
Rustom’s father Shahjahan Ali Akanda also demanded capital punishment for the killers.
