Jahangirnagar University Teachers’ Association (JUTA) had taken an initiative to help the children, who have lost their parents in the Rana Plaza collapse, continue their educational activities.
Some 600 teachers of the university extended their hands to help these children, sacrificing their one day’s salary.
The JUTA yesterday distributed a financial grant of Tk4.8 lakh to eight children of Rana Plaza victims for their unhindered continuation of educational activities. A cheque of Tk60,000 was distributed to each of the children at the teachers’ lounge of the university’s cafeteria.
The JUTA have also opened a fixed deposit for five years at the Savar Branch of Dhaka Bank for these children, where they would draw the interest of the money at three-month intervals to distribute among other children, a source said.
Prof Sharif Uddin, general secretary of the JUTA, said: “Although the money is very little, we hope it would help them to continue their educational activities which became almost uncertain following the accident.”
JUTA President Prof Ajit Kumar Mazumder urged the family members of these children to spend this money only for educational purpose of their children. He also thanked the university teachers for their contribution in this initiative.
