HSC, equivalent exams under Chittagong Board postponed due to floods

The Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations scheduled for Wednesday under the Chittagong Education Board have been postponed due to adverse weather and flooding.

The decision was announced late Tuesday night in an order signed by Professor Syed Akhtaruzzaman, president of the Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee.

Earlier in the night, separate orders had postponed Wednesday's examinations in Chittagong, Rangamati and Cox's Bazar districts. The latest order extended the suspension to all districts under the Chittagong Board.

Examinations under all other education boards across the country will be held as scheduled. A revised timetable for the postponed examinations will be announced later.

This year's HSC examinations are being held with a common question paper across the general education boards.

Heavy rainfall over the past two days has caused widespread flooding in Chittagong, Cox's Bazar and the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The Chittagong city weather office recorded 394mm of rainfall in the 24 hours between 6pm Monday and 6pm Tuesday, the highest single-day July rainfall in 43 years.

At least six people have died in Chittagong city, Rangunia, Baghaichhari in Rangamati and Cox's Bazar in incidents linked to wall collapses and landslides.

Road communication between Khagrachari and Rangamati has been disrupted, while many rural roads have gone underwater.

At Shah Amanat International Airport, three incoming flights were unable to land because of poor weather. The Cox's Bazar-bound Tourist Express carrying around 1,000 passengers was stranded in Chittagong city after waterlogging affected railway tracks.

Cox's Bazar has suffered some of the worst damage. In the Rohingya camps in Ukhia, 193 small and large landslides were reported over the last two days. Large parts of Sadar, Teknaf, Ramu, Maheshkhali, Chakaria and Pekua upazilas have been inundated, leaving more than 100 villages under water.
