DU VC intends to step down after election, statement says

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan has expressed his intention to step down from his position after the 13th National Parliamentary elections, while emphasizing that he does not want to create a sudden vacancy or disrupt university administration.

He said he is willing to continue in office for a specified period if requested by the government or relevant authorities.

The announcement was made Tuesday evening in a press statement signed by Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, director of Dhaka University’s Public Relations Office.

The statement said earlier in the day, at a special press conference held in the Virtual Classroom adjacent to the VC’s office, Niaz spoke about his resignation plans. Some media outlets had misreported his remarks as an immediate resignation, which he clarified was not the case.

“I want to step down after the election. But if vacating my position now would create any disruption at the university, I am willing to continue for a while at the government’s request,” Niaz said during the press conference.

He recalled taking office in August 2024 during an emergency at students’ request, focusing first on resuming academics and stabilizing the university. He said he now wishes to step down and return to his original position as a Grade-1 Professor, formalizing the move with a letter to the President and Chancellor.

“Although some limitations remain, the university is showing an overall upward trend. We have successfully navigated the emergency situation,” he added. Dr. Khan emphasized that he never viewed the vice-chancellor role as a regular job, calling it “a responsibility entrusted to me at the request and encouragement of the students.”

Explaining his reason for stepping down, he said: “I want a regular political government to take office so that they can manage the administration as they see fit. We will fully cooperate with them.”

During his tenure, he highlighted several achievements, including the reinstatement of democratic processes, effective functioning of hall councils, and institutionalization of students’ rights. On the international stage, the university has advanced nearly 200 places in the Times Higher Education rankings, increased foreign student enrollment by around 160 percent, and significantly boosted research and publications.

The VC also noted ongoing infrastructure projects worth Tk2,841 crore, aimed at addressing shortages in housing, academic buildings, and research facilities. He said he will request the government to promptly end his deputation and allow him to return to his teaching post in the Development Studies Department. “I have worked hard for many years. Now I need some rest,” he added.

Earlier, when the press was informed about the special press conference, rumors circulated that NIaz was resigning immediately. He clarified his position during the event.
