Special scholarship: JnU students protest over alleged discrimination

A section of students from the 20th batch of Jagannath University (JnU) staged a protest on Sunday, demanding inclusion in the first instalment of the special scholarship list for the 2024–25 academic year.

The students began their demonstration in front of the university’s administrative building around 11:30am on January 25, chanting slogans such as “Scholarship is our right,” “Who can stop it,” and “Administration and JnU students—one body, one mind.”

The protesters demanded that students of the 20th batch be included in the first instalment of the scholarship alongside other batches.

Speaking to reporters, protesting student Mustafiz said: “We want the scholarship list to be revised so that we are included. We should be brought under the scholarship along with the 15th and 19th batches.” He warned that tougher protests would follow if their demands were not met.

JnU published the special scholarship list on January 23, which includes a total of 10,319 students. The first list contains the names of 8,330 students from the 2019–20 to 2023–24 academic years, while 1,989 students were included in a second list.

According to the university, students who were expelled, admitted under quota, or had low CGPAs were excluded from the scholarship list.
