Students of Jhenaidah Polytechnic Institute locked the gates of their institution and engaged in vandalism Sunday morning.
Police held eight students over the incident, which takes place amidst countrywide demonstrations held by polytechnic students demanding “proper evaluation.”
Executive Magistrate Jakir Hossain, deployed on campus, said the agitating students locked the main gates and the principal’s room at around 10am.
Demonstrations were staged throughout campus premises in the morning and the authorities were compelled to postpone all examinations sine die.
The students were demanding changing their job designation of “supervisors” and alleviation of all forms of what they described as “discrimination.”
Additional law enforcers were deployed around campus premises.
Principal of Jhenaidah Polytechnic Institute, Manir Hossain, could not be reached through telephone.
