The authorities of the University of Science and Technology in Chittagong (USTC) declared the institution closed for an indefinite period Wednesday after a clash between the students from two of its faculties.
The clash took place at around 12:30pm between students of the BBA faculty and MBBS students of Bangabandhu Memorial Hospital in the university campus.
The altercation left a BBA student, Mithun Chowdhury, severely injured. He sustained injuries on his head and was admitted to the university’s Bangabandhu Memorial Hospital.
The university authorities made the decision in an emergency meeting at 1:30pm.
AHM Ishaque Chowdhury, pro vice-chancellor (Academic) of the USTC told the Dhaka Tribune that the authorities have decided to close the university to avert any further violence.
There were foreign students in the campus and the authorities were concerned about their safety as well, he added.
Though classes will be closed, exams will continue to be held according to the schedule while the academic office will remain open, said the Pro VC.
