Students of CU College demand principal’s resignation

Students of Chittagong University College staged demonstrations at their campus on Thursday, demanding the resignation of the acting Principle Kiran Chandra Deb for allegedly caning a student on Wednesday.

The students also gave a 48-hour deadline for their demands to be fulfilled, sources said.

On Wednesday, Sadikur Rahman, an HSC second year student of the college, was critically injured when the principal allegedly caned him and three other students on charges of smoking.

Several hundred students padlocked classrooms on Thursday and brought out a procession that paraded through the university.

CU Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury, CU Proctor Khan Towhid Osman, and police met with the protesters to bring the situation under control.

Agitating students opened the classrooms after receiving assurances from the university authorities, sources added.

Prof Chowdhury told the Dhaka Tribune that a four-member probe committee, led by the CU proctor, has been formed to investigate the caning incident.

Kiran Chandra Deb, the acting principal of Chittagong University College, could not be reached over mobile phone despite repeated attempts.
