Teachers and students of Rajshahi University (RU) Monday formed a human chain and brought out a mourning procession on the campus, demanding exemplary punishment for the killers of a student of the university Shahadat Hossain.
Earlier, on Friday Rajpara police recovered the body of Shahadat Hossain, a third year student of physics department of the university from an under-construction dormitory in Terokhedia area in the Rajshahi city.
Shahadat, son of Lokman Ali, hailed from Debinagar in Chapainawabganj.
Initially, police could not identify the address of the deceased while on Sunday the family members seeing the photography of the deceased on newspapers identified the deceased at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital morgue.
About four hundred students and teachers of physics department of RU brought out a mourning procession on the campus around 10pm.
Later, they formed a human chain in front of the entrance gate of the university at 11am, demanding exemplary punishment to the killers of Shahadat Hossain.
In the human chain, university’s physics department professor emeritus Dr Arun Kumer Boshak, Chairman of the department Prof Shomnath Bhattachargya, Prof Aminul Islam, Prof F Nazrul Islam and Prof Saleh Hasan, among others, spoke on the occasion.
Officer-in-Charge of Rajpara police station ABM Rezaul Islam told Dhaka Tribune that the police had arrested four students of Rajshahi Institution of Health Technology for their alleged involvement in the killing.
The arrestees were identified as Ashrafuzzaman, 22, Abul Hossain, Ashikur Rahman, 22, all of them hailed from village Dhokrakul under Puthia upazila and Saniyat Hossain, of village Goranpur under Patnitola upazila in Naogaon.
Assistant Sub-Inspector of the police station Shariful Islam filed a murder case in this connection in which the arrestees were shown arrest.
During the preliminary investigation, the arrestees confessed their involvement in the incident.
They were sent to jail after producing before a court, he added.
