The body of a female student was found hanging in her dormitory at Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Sunday morning, prompting suspicions of suicide.
The deceased, identified as Takia Tasnim, was a first-year student (Batch 53, 2023-24) of the Department of Geography and Environment. The incident occurred at Bir Pratik Taraman Bibi Hall around 5am.
Ashulia police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abu Bakar Siddique confirmed the information.
Takia, a resident of the Paranduali area in Magura Sadar Upazila, was living in Room 7005 on the hall's eighth floor.
According to initial reports, Takia had been on a video call with a friend at the time of the incident. Her friend alerted her classmates after noticing unusual behaviour, urging them to intervene. When her roommates forced the door open, they found Takia hanging from a ceiling fan with a rope around her neck.
The university's medical officer was called to the scene but declared her dead upon examination.
Takia’s classmates and hall administration noted that she was irregular in her residency at the hall, often staying with an uncle in nearby Savar and attending classes from there. She returned to the hall on Saturday and was reportedly alone in her room during the incident.
Hall authorities found items including a mobile phone and diaries in her room, which have been handed over to police for investigation.
"The local guardian, her uncle, has also arrived. Police are examining her belongings, which might provide insights," said Abeda Sultana, the hall's provost.
According to hall sources, Takia had been on a video call lasting one hour and 54 minutes prior to her death.
Assistant Proctor Prof Mohammad Abdur Razzak said: "We immediately rushed to the scene upon being informed and contacted Ashulia Police. The police subsequently recovered the body."
OC Abu Bakar Siddique said: "The body is now at Gonoshasthaya Samaj Vittik Medical College Hospital in Savar. Legal proceedings are underway, and further action will be taken after speaking to her family members."
