Professor Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan of the Department of Philosophy has been appointed as the new vice-chancellor (VC) of Jahangirnagar University (JU).
The appointment was made on Thursday, with the approval of the president and chancellor, in accordance with Section 11(2) of the Jahangirnagar University Act, 1973, on a temporary basis.
The appointment is effective from the date of joining the vice-chancellor position.
Dr Ahsan will receive a salary and benefits equivalent to his current position and will enjoy other entitlements as per the regulations.
As the chief executive officer of the university, he is required to be present on the university campus at all times.
The president and chancellor reserve the right to revoke this appointment at any time if necessary.
Prof Kamrul Ahsan serves as the president of JU unit Nationalist Teachers’ Forum.
During the anti-quota movement, he gained the trust of the students by actively supporting the students during demonstrations and on TV talk shows. Apart from politics, he is also well-known as an academic and media personality.
In an immediate response, Prof Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan told Dhaka Tribune: "I express my gratitude to all concerned for keeping faith in me as the vice-chancellor. One thing we have to remember is that those who were martyred had some demands on their lives. We have to rebuild the dream that the martyrs gave their blood to build a new Bangladesh. I will remember their contribution during my tenure. It is my request to students and colleagues that if there is any wrong work done by me, you will point it out and criticize logically."
Earlier on August 7, Ex JU VC Prof Nurul Alam resigned. In the resignation letter, he mentioned 'personal and family reasons for his resignation.
