Students of Rajshahi University blocked the railway for over four hours on Friday, demanding reform of the quota system for government jobs and seeking justice for reported attacks on protesters on Thursday.
They blocked the rail tracks near the Station Bazar area adjacent to the university from 5pm to 9.10pm.
The rail communication with the rest of the country remained cut off following the blockade.
Tofayel Ahmed said: "We demand justice for the attacks on protesters and a fair resolution of the quota system in all government jobs. A maximum of 5% quota should be set in all grades of government jobs. We want this issue to be resolved directly through legislation in the parliament."
Another protester, Salauddin Ammar, said: "Our demand is to maintain only the ethnic and disabled quotas, capping all government job quotas at 5%. Justice is needed for attacks on students across universities."
He further said: "Chhatra League activists attacked a student and threw him out of the hall for participating in the quota reform movement. He should be respectfully reinstated into the hall, and justice should be served following a fair investigation into the incident."
Clashes between police and quota protesters left at least 30 people, including three policemen and journalists, injured in Dhaka, Comilla and Chittagong on Thursday.
Students and job seekers have been holding demonstrations across the country for some time demanding quota reform.
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Wednesday issued a status quo of four weeks on the issue of quotas, instructing the protesters to return to their classes and attend their exams.
Expressing their disappointment, the protesters rejected the order, announcing their intention to remain on the streets until their demand was met.
