The long-awaited evaluation method for primary and secondary students under the new curriculum has finally been approved.
The National Curriculum Coordination Committee (NCCC) gave final approval to the method in a meeting at the Secretariat on Monday.
After the meeting, the acting chairman of the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) Prof Moshiuzzaman told Dhaka Tribune that the new method will be effective in implementing the new curriculum’s goal of ending students' dependency on memorization.
In this new evaluation system, the assessment for students will be divided into two parts.
In the process, 65% will be based on written exams, and 35% will be activity-based.
The activity-based segment covers assignments, presentations, research, demonstrations, problem-solving, and planning, among other hands-on tasks.
The written exam questions will be related to the activity-based assessments. The duration of each of the two-part exams will be five hours.
The name of the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exam will remain unchanged and the exam will be administered by education boards.
At the end of each year, students will be assessed through a test and their results will be displayed as symbols such as a triangle, square, or circle instead of marks.
The new curriculum introduced last year is currently being implemented in grades one to three of primary school and grades six to nine of secondary school.
The government introduced a new curriculum for grade one, six and seven in the last year.
This year, the new curriculum was introduced in four grades including second, third, eighth, and ninth. It will be implemented in fifth and tenth grades in 2025, eleventh in 2026 and twelfth grades in 2027.
