The protesting students of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet) have suspended their ongoing agitation following productive discussions with the administration.
In response, the Cuet administration has pledged to review the decision to halt academic activities and evacuate the halls.
The students initiated their protest in response to the tragic deaths of two Cuet students who were involved in a fatal accident while riding a motorcycle on the Chittagong-Kaptai road.
On Thursday, from 8:30pm to 11pm, the university administration convened a meeting with 20 protesting students.
Following this meeting, both sides made announcements regarding the developments.
Subsequently, the students lifted the blockade from the road in front of main gate of Cuet, leading to the resumption of traffic on the Chittagong-Kaptai road.
After the meeting, the students held a press conference on the campus at 11:30pm, during which they declared that their demand for the arrest of the bus driver responsible for the accident had been met.
Additionally, the university administration committed to establishing a compensation fund to which current and former students, faculty, and staff will contribute.
Furthermore, plans are underway to commence the widening of the Chittagong-Kaptai road, with an assurance of a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner within two weeks.
The decision to suspend the movement was made contingent upon the fulfilment of these demands and assurances.
Cuet Public Relations Officer Rashed Parvez said: "A syndicate meeting has been convened today following the announcement of the movement's suspension. During this meeting, decisions will be reconsidered regarding the evacuation of halls and the suspension of academic activities. For the time being, students have been permitted to remain in the residence halls."
