Founded in September last year, Kurigram Agricultural University plans to establish a temporary campus within the next few months and start operations with two departments – fisheries and agriculture.
Students will sit for the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent exams on November 6.
Vice Chancellor Professor Md Zakir Hossain said that a limited number of students would be admitted to the two departments in the first year. "We are currently trying to determine a temporary campus.”
He also said: “We are working to start the admission process with the students who will pass the HSC examination this year. If the government and the UGC (University Grants Commission) authorities approve, the classes will start in the next academic year.
“The number of seats and subjects will be increased next year.”
The university authorities have formed a committee to find land for the permanent campus. Subsequently, the Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) Office will acquire the land.
Currently, discussions are underway to use the Kurigram Textile Mill premises as a temporary campus.
In response to a question, the VC told Bangla Tribune: "Everything depends on the timely release of funds by the government. We haven't been able to buy the VC's car. There are limitations, there are also global issues. However, I hope that this problem will not be a hindrance regarding the commencement of academic activities.”
Regarding the university's plan to start operations early next year, DC Mohammad Rezaul Karim said: “I have learned from the university authorities that the admission will start in the current academic year. We will provide all kinds of assistance in this regard.”
On September 15, 2021, Parliament passed the Kurigram Agricultural University Bill 2021, aiming at taking necessary measures for teaching and research and training at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in various subjects of agricultural science. In addition to educational activities, the university will organize exhibitions on sustainable agricultural technologies and high-yielding agricultural products.
