Shahidullah Hall at Dhaka University (DU) has been renamed as Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Hall.
The DU Senate unanimously conferred this name at its annual senate meeting and DU budget session that took place on Saturday.
DU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique asked the senate members to specify the name of the hall and to which Shahidullah the name refers.
Dr Arefin said: “Many people have asked me to specify the name behind Shahidullah Hall. There is confusion about the name. So I would like assent from the senate members on changing to the new name, Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Hall. The senate unanimously granted the proposal.”
Shahidullah Hall is one of the oldest residential halls for Muslim male science faculty students of DU.
Established in 1921 as Lyton Hall, it was subsequently renamed Dhaka Hall and renamed again for the famous linguist, Dr Muhammad Shahidullah, following his death in 1969.
