Students demonstrate against fees hike at Bijoy 71 Hall

The agitated students of Bijoy 71 Hall at Dhaka University have besieged the office of the hall provost, AJM Safiul Alam, demanding the withdrawal of 10 times hike in seat fees.

The protesting students of the hall chanted slogans against the imposition of the dormitory fees all around the hall and besiege the provost office.

In face of demonstrations, the provost later sat with the leaders of different student organisations, including Chhatra Union, Chhatra Federation and Chhatra Front.

Later, the students' leaders announced that they would continue their protest as the no formal announcement regarding the withdrawal of the hiked fees came after the meeting.

Earlier in the day, several student organisations demanded reduction of the newly imposed seat fees of the hall as it is ten times more than that for the other halls of the same university.

In the meantime, Progressive Student Alliance, an alliance of progressive student organisations, has held a press conference at Madhur Canteen in the morning and gave an ultimatum.

Bijoy-71 Hall authorities on November 9 issued the notice that each student has to pay Tk3600 every year for renewing their dormitory ID cards which is ten times more than other halls.

At the press conference the leaders of the organisations urged the authorities to take immediate steps to withdraw the fees as it is contradictory to the policies of the University Grant Commission (UGC).

They announced a seven-day ultimatum to withdraw the fees, unless they would go for tougher program, they warned.

In the press conference, Chhatra Federation DU unit President Ummay Habiba Benzir, Chhatra Union DU President Liton Nondi, Chhatra Front DU Secretary General Eva Majumdar, among others, were present.

Earlier in January, 2014, Dhaka University saw the similar protest when AJM Safiul Alam was the Chairman of the  Dhaka University Television and Film Studies Department and he hiked the fees to around five times than the other departments.
