45 candidates to vie for one seat at CU

Chittagong University has received a record number of undergraduate applications this year as a total of 45 candidates will be competing for a single place. 

University officials said they received 211,952 applications, submitted online and through text messages in 23 days, against 4,653 positions under 10 faculties in the academic year 2015-16.   

Deputy Registrar (academic affairs) SM Akbar Hossain, also the member secretary of the admission test committee, told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday that a stiff competition lies ahead for the candidates.

“This year, we have got 45 applicants competing for a single seat while it was 39 last year,” he said.

The number of applicants rose by 32,379 this year but a mere 137 seats were added in different departments, taking the total number of available positions to 4,653, said admission committee sources. Applications from prospective students were invited between September 7 and September 30 midnight.

Last year, there were a total of 179,573 applications while it was 162,348 in the 2013-14 session, said sources.

Like previous years, the highest number of applications (29,648) were submitted for the B 1 unit under the arts and humanities faculty, said the deputy registrar.

A total of 26,362 applicants, which is the second highest, applied in the C 1 unit, followed by 25,811 applications in the F 1 unit under the biological science faculty.

“Necessary preparations have already been taken to ensure that admission tests are held smoothly without any hassles,” said the deputy registrar.

The entrance examinations are slated to be held from November 1 to 9 and more information on this is available on the university website.
