The private university students have continued their demonstration in Chittagong for the second consecutive day on Saturday demanding withdrawal of 7.5% VAT slapped on their tuition.
The agitating students of BGC Trust University blocked the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar Highway in front of their main campus at Chandanaish upazila in Chittagong protesting the VAT imposed decision on their tuition fees.
Campus and police sources said around 100 students of the university came out from the campus and took to the highway just after the departure of Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal at the university area at around 11am.
Chanting slogans against VAT, the students stayed on the road for twenty minutes halting the traffic movement on the both side of the busy road causing long tailback, said campus sources.
Officer-In-Charge (OC) (investigation) Nazrul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune: “The students attempted to block the street soon after the departure of the state minister at the area while police removed the demonstrating students away from the road by perusing them”.
Later, they went inside the campus while the vehicular movements were resumed after 15 minutes later, added the OC.
Earlier, the students blockaded the highway on Thursday for one hour halting the traffic movements, said the sources.
