Professor Dr Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury has been appointed as the new vice-chancellor of Chittagong University.
University Deputy Registrar (Information) Md Farhad Hossain disclosed the information to the Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday.
President Abdul Hamid has selected Prof Dr Iftekhar as the 17th VC of CU, he said.
The new VC will carry the onus for the next four years. Iftekhar had been holding the post of Pro VC of the university since May 30, 2013.
The registrar said he would take charge from present VC Professor Anwarul Azim Arif from June 15.
Professor Dr Iftekhar was born in Chittagong and completed his graduation from the Sociology Department of CU. Later, he joined the department as a lecturer in 1982 and completed his PhD from Sakura University of Japan in 1988.
In a message, Professor Iftekhar sought cooperation from the students, teachers and staff of the university in order to maintain a congenial academic environment on the campus.
