Police have recovered 20 crude bombs, 41 torch-sticks and around two litres of kerosene during an operation near the Ansar Camp in Paikpara, Mirpur.
The items were seized on Thursday following a tip-off, according to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
Hasan Mohammad Naser Bikabdar, deputy commissioner of the DMP's Mirpur division, confirmed the recovery.
He said police received information overnight that suspected crude bombs and torch-sticks had been left on the road in front of the Ansar Camp.
A team led by Mirpur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Hafizur Rahman recovered 20 crude bombs, including 15 inside three paper bags and five lying on the road.
Police also seized 41 torch-sticks, around two litres of kerosene in two bottles inside a shopping bag, and several sheets of soft polystyrene, commonly known as thermocol.
The 20 crude bombs were later detonated in two separate operations inside a pit dug at an open area of a construction site belonging to the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, near Hakkani Goli in Kalyanpur, the deputy commissioner said.
Legal proceedings are underway, he added.
Bikabdar also said the recovery took place around the time of the arrest of Al Mahmud Tarek, a former central organising secretary of the banned Chhatra League and former general secretary of its Dhaka College unit.
He said police suspected the seized materials might have been intended for a major act of sabotage.
