More than 1,000 students of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) blocked roads in Agargaon on Wednesday, demanding the restoration of their former research field.
Around 11am, the students marched from the university's flagpole area and took positions at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Centre intersection, bringing traffic to a halt.
The protesters also announced plans to burn an effigy in front of the Public Works Department (PWD) complex in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Wednesday.
At a meeting between teachers and students on Tuesday, the protesters announced a boycott of all examinations and said they would not attend classes scheduled after 11am.
Later that night, around 10pm, students from all academic batches gathered at the university's TSC premises and declared an indefinite shutdown. As a result, all academic activities were suspended from Wednesday.
The protests began on October 27, with students claiming that the former trade fair grounds belonged to the university and demanding that the land be handed over to it.
On that day, students seized machinery and vehicles being used for soil testing ahead of the planned construction of a secretariat building on the site and brought them onto the campus.
The following day, after issuing an ultimatum to halt fair-related activities, students vandalised several structures on the grounds.
On October 29, they blocked roads. That same day, State Minister for Youth and Sports Md Aminul Haque announced the suspension of all fairs, including the National Youth Fair.
However, the protesters continued their agitation, demanding the removal of structures from the site and withdrawal of cases filed against unidentified students.
On November 2, they took further action by tilling the land and asserting control over it.
