Police officer beaten during Mirpur workers' protest

A police officer was beaten by protesters after being surrounded and knocked to the ground during clashes over a garment workers’ movement in Mirpur, Dhaka, on Tuesday.

The officer, identified as Saimon, is receiving treatment at Central Police Hospital, Rajarbagh.

The incident took place around noon in front of a supermarket on Kalshi Road, about 200 metres from Mirpur-11 metro station.

Witnesses said protesters were hurling bricks and stones at police from all directions, forcing officers to take shelter at different locations.

Some took refuge in nearby homes and shops to protect themselves. However, one officer failed to find shelter and was surrounded by protesters, who then knocked him to the ground and assaulted him.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Touhidul Arif of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s POM South Division said: “He had been left alone. Taking advantage of the situation, some miscreants attacked him.”

He added that police were trying to identify those involved by examining CCTV footage.
