Clashes broke out between garment workers and police again in the capital’s Mirpur area on Monday morning, as police moved to disperse workers attempting to gather on the roads.
At around 9:15am, police chased away workers who had taken positions on the road. As of the latest reports, confrontations between the two sides were continuing.
Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Mirpur police station, confirmed the incident, saying: “The workers came to block the road, and we dispersed them.”
Earlier on Sunday, garment workers clashed with police during protests demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk30,000.
On Monday morning, when workers attempted to gather again in the Mirpur-10 area, police intervened, triggering a series of chases and counter-chases. Workers threw bricks and stones at police, who responded by firing tear gas shells.
The workers were subsequently dispersed, but tension remained high across the area. Most shops remained closed, while police restricted people from gathering on the streets and questioned individuals they considered suspicious.
