Garment workers block roads in Mirpur, traffic disrupted

Garment workers blocked roads in the capital’s Mirpur area on Sunday morning, bringing vehicular movement to a standstill in Mirpur 10 and Mirpur 12.

The workers have been staging demonstrations and blocking roads for the past few days, demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk30,000.

Sub-Inspector Hafizul Islam, who was on duty at Mirpur police station, confirmed the blockade, saying the protests had disrupted traffic in the area.

He said the protesters were moving in small processions. Adequate police personnel had been deployed to prevent any untoward incidents, while senior police officials were also present at the scene.

No untoward incidents had been reported so far, he added.
