Prime Minister’s Adviser on Information and Broadcasting Dr Zahed Ur Rahman has said the government is “saddened and embarrassed” by the vandalism at the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur and allegations of involvement by members of the ruling party.
“The government is saddened whenever the rights of any citizen are violated, any facility is vandalised, or an individual is attacked. Ensuring citizens’ safety is the government’s responsibility, so such incidents cause embarrassment to the government,” he said.
He made the remarks at the Department of Information’s conference room at the Secretariat on Tuesday afternoon during a weekly briefing on the progress of government activities. He later responded to questions from journalists.
Asked what action would be taken if members of the ruling party were found to be involved, Zahed said: “Whoever is found to be linked to the incident through the investigation will be brought to justice.”
He said media investigations were important, but the police investigation would ultimately form the basis of the charge sheet.
“If the police confirm anyone’s involvement during the investigation, action will be taken against them as well,” he said.
Zahed said such incidents have a serious impact on the public.
“The state’s primary duty is to prevent crime. Once a crime has occurred, it is also crucial to ensure swift justice so that similar incidents do not happen in the future,” he said.
