Detective Branch (DB) of police has arrested Mizanur Rahman, 59, the son-in-law of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Kushtia-2 constituency MP Md Abdul Gafur, in a case filed over an attack on New Guinea Properties in Dhaka’s ECB Chattar area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) DB chief and Additional Commissioner Shafiqul Islam confirmed the arrest to Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday morning.
He said investigators had obtained significant information by questioning those already arrested and that operations were underway to arrest others who may have been involved.
According to the DB chief, Major General (retd) Golam Mahiuuddin Chowdhury and Nazim Uddin, the owner of New Guinea Properties, have been involved in a longstanding dispute over the possession and control of 35 kathas of land.
He said people allegedly acting on behalf of Major General (retd) Golam Mahiuuddin Chowdhury entered the New Guinea Properties premises and vandalised several structures.
The DB chief said an investigation into Mahiuuddin Chowdhury’s alleged involvement was underway and that he would be questioned if necessary. Legal action would be taken if evidence of his involvement is found, he added.
On Monday around 5pm, a DB Gulshan Division team detained Mizanur Rahman from his residence in Dhaka’s West Matikata area, according to AFM Anwar Hossain, deputy commissioner of the DB’s Gulshan Division.
The DB said Mizanur was named accused No 9 in a case filed with Cantonment police station on September 27.
On Saturday night, unidentified individuals attacked New Guinea Properties in the ECB Chattar area.
During the attack, the Brownfish studio of content creator Salman Muqtadir was extensively vandalised and looted. Muqtadir had rented a floor of the New Guinea Properties-owned building and set up his studio there.
Police said the studio was also vandalised during the attack.
