The candidates who were recommended for government primary school assistant teacher posts but have yet to receive appointment letters staged a sit-in at Shahbagh in the capital on Sunday.
The protesters from across the country gathered in front of Dhaka University Central Library in the morning and later marched towards Shahbagh.
They took up position on the road in front of Shahbagh Police Station around 11am, demanding issuance of their appointment letters by Sunday.
Many of the candidates said they had completed the written and viva examinations, passed the selection process and submitted all required documents, only to find that their names were missing from the final appointment lists issued on September 24.
Around 2500 candidates didn’t get the appointment letters, according to the protesters.
One candidate from Bogra, who joined the protest, said they would not end the sit-in unless they received a positive response from the authorities.
Several protesters were seen crying while recounting their personal hardships.
Candidates said they had spent months preparing for the recruitment process and had informed their families and relatives that they had secured government jobs after the final results were published.
The non-issuance of appointment letters has left many of them facing financial and emotional uncertainty.
Several of them broke down in tears while describing the uncertainty surrounding their careers and families.
