Meghmallar Basu, former president of Bangladesh Chhatra Union and a central council member of the Network for People’s Action (NPA), was put on life support at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Wednesday after his condition deteriorated.
At around 7:30pm, DMCH ICU medical officer Hasan Al Banna said: “Meghmallar Basu has been put on life support. We are continuing his treatment.”
Hospital sources said Basu was found ill near the gate of Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital around 12:30am on Tuesday. People known to him later took him to DMCH, where doctors performed gastric lavage on suspicion of poisoning.
DMCH Director Brigadier General Md Asaduzzaman said doctors decided to move Basu to the ICU as his condition had been deteriorating since Tuesday afternoon.
“Doctors felt that he needed to be taken to the ICU. His physical condition had been deteriorating since Tuesday afternoon. That is why the doctors moved him to the ICU,” he said.
Basu was initially admitted to Bed 3 in Room 602 of DMCH and received treatment there before being transferred to the ICU.
