Police have arrested eight alleged members of a robbery gang in connection with the armed robbery of Tk38 lakh in Dhanmondi, Dhaka.
Deputy Commissioner of the DMP Media and Public Relations Division Md Akter Hossain confirmed the arrests on Sunday.
The arrested individuals are Tanvir Abedin alias Jui, 41; Md Mojibur Rahman, 60; Md Zakir Hossain alias Captain Zakir, 60; Md Solaiman Mridha, 55; Mohammad Kabir Hossain, 50; Abul Kalam Azad, 50; Md Zakaria Hossain alias Lenin, 40; and Sajal Chowdhury, 31.
According to Dhanmondi police, a group of 8-10 people robbed Md Khorshed Alam, 50, of Tk38 lakh at gunpoint around 2:10pm on August 30, 2026.
The robbery took place on the paved road in front of Dingi Restaurant on Road 12/A under Dhanmondi Model police station.
As the robbers fled with the money, Tanvir Abedin and Mojibur Rahman were arrested with the help of police and local residents. A locally made revolver and four rounds of ammunition were recovered from their possession.
Based on information provided by Mojibur Rahman, police later conducted an operation in the Dakshinkhan police station area and arrested Zakir Hossain alias Captain Zakir.
Police subsequently used information provided by the arrested suspects and information technology to conduct raids in different parts of the country, arresting five more alleged members of the gang — Solaiman Mridha, Mohammad Kabir Hossain, Abul Kalam Azad, Zakaria Hossain alias Lenin and Sajal Chowdhury.
During the operations, police recovered Tk345,350 from Zakaria Hossain alias Lenin and Tk230,000 from Sajal Chowdhury.
A total of Tk575,350 of the looted money was recovered and seized.
Police said operations are underway to arrest the remaining absconding and unidentified members of the gang and recover the rest of the stolen money.
A robbery case and a separate case under the Arms Act have been filed with Dhanmondi Model police station in connection with the incident.
