A member of the Special Branch (SB) of police was beaten to death in Aminbazar, Savar, on Saturday night.
The deceased, Altaf Hossain, 58, was a sub-inspector with the SB’s Dhaka zone. His younger son, Ariful Islam, 26, was seriously injured in the attack.
The incident occurred around 8pm in the Barodeshi area of Aminbazar.
Altaf, son of Jurain Ali Sheikh of Sadhupara village under Enayetpur police station in Sirajganj, lived with his family in the Barodeshi Medina City area of Aminbazar.
Police said, citing witnesses, that an argument broke out between Altaf, his son and 10-15 people over a private car parked in front of a garment factory in the Barodeshi Medina Housing area.
At one stage, the two sides were involved in a physical altercation, during which Altaf and Ariful were beaten.
They were taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka around 9:30pm. Doctors declared Altaf dead after they were taken there.
Savar Model police station Officer-in-Charge Md Saiful Alam said the SB member was beaten to death by a group of people in Aminbazar.
“We are at the scene and will provide further details later,” he said.
Dhaka District Police Superintendent Shamima Parveen told Bangla Tribune that Altaf and his son were attacked near their home following a dispute over a parked private car.
She said they were beaten when they tried to intervene and resolve the dispute.
“Altaf died in the attack, while his son was seriously injured. Efforts are underway to arrest those involved,” she added.
SB Savar Zone Assistant Sub-Inspector Masud Rana confirmed that Altaf was a sub-inspector with the SB’s Dhaka zone, not the Savar zone.
“He had a residence in Aminbazar, Savar. We are still investigating who killed him and why,” he said.
