Two people have been arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in connection with the death of a schoolteacher who fell from a rickshaw after being pulled by snatchers on Manik Mia Avenue in the capital.
In a statement issued on Sunday afternoon, RAB said that its RAB-2 unit had arrested the main suspect, Md Poni alias Para Poni, along with his accomplice. The motorcycle they allegedly used in the incident was also seized.
The statement said that further details would be disclosed later.
On Saturday morning, 56-year-old Ranjila Parvin, headteacher of Bagbari Girls’ Government Primary School in Gabtoli upazila of Bogra, arrived in Dhaka for eye treatment.
She was travelling by rickshaw from Gabtoli Bus Terminal to Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute and Hospital in the Khamarbari area. Her husband, Abdul Matin, was accompanying her.
At around 6:30am, their rickshaw reached the road in front of the South Plaza of the Parliament Complex on Manik Mia Avenue. At that time, two snatchers riding a motorcycle approached them and attempted to snatch her bag.
During the ensuing struggle, Ranjila fell from the rickshaw. She was taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in an injured condition, where doctors later declared her dead.
