Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has reopened the Kamrangirchar Loha Bridge after completing renovation work in 25 days with its own funding.
DSCC Administrator and freedom fighter Md Abdus Salam inaugurated the renovated bridge on Friday, with Dhaka-7 MP Hamidur Rahman attending as the special guest.
The 145-metre-long and 4.2-metre-wide bridge is used by around 70,000 people every day. The renovation is expected to benefit nearly 5 million residents of Kamrangirchar.
The renovation of the dilapidated bridge is expected to ease travel difficulties for local residents and pedestrians while improving safety.
Speaking at the inauguration, DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam said the city corporation was committed to making travel easier and safer for city residents.
He said completing the renovation in a record 25 days with DSCC’s own funding demonstrated that commitment.
Salam said an initiative had also been taken to revise the proposed eight-lane project to preserve the historic bridge for future generations.
He announced that the bridge would henceforth be open only to pedestrians.
DSCC Region-3 Executive Engineer Ahsan Habib, officials concerned and local dignitaries were present at the inauguration.
