Dhaka University on Saturday launched a three-day campaign to restore the July graffiti displayed across its campus, aiming to preserve the murals created during the July–August 2024 mass uprising.
Vice-Chancellor Professor ABM Obaidul Islam inaugurated the program at the main gate of the vice-chancellor's residence.
The restoration work will continue through Sunday and Monday along the route from the vice-chancellor's residence to Rokeya Hall, with registered students and artists taking part.
Speaking at the inauguration, DU VC said the July graffiti serves as a reminder of the "misrule of the fallen fascist government" and that the restoration initiative is intended to preserve the memory of the oppression and persecution depicted in the murals.
He said: "During July and August, patriotic students painted the walls with graffiti depicting the marks of Sheikh Hasina's oppression, persecution, and vengeance. These graffiti now stand as living history for the nation."
The vice-chancellor said the murals would continue to remind future generations of the events of July–August 2024 and help keep the anti-fascist spirit alive.
He also urged people to remain vigilant against the return of fascism and called on citizens to support the government's efforts to build a discrimination-free society.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Abdus Salam, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane, Treasurer Professor M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, were present at the time, among others.
As part of events marking the second anniversary of the July mass uprising, a discussion will be held at 7:30pm on Saturday at the Amar Ekushey Hall auditorium. The VC will attend as the chief guest, while Sarjis Alam, chief organizer (Northern Region) of the National Citizen Party (NCP), will attend as the special guest.
