Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has allocated Tk50.5 crore for mosquito control insecticides in its Tk4,004.6 crore budget for FY2026-27 after a pre-monsoon survey found Aedes mosquito larval density above the prescribed index in 63 of its 75 wards.
The survey identified 27 wards as high-risk areas, where the corporation carried out special crash programs ahead of the monsoon, according to DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam.
Salam unveiled the budget at the DSCC Nagar Bhaban auditorium on Thursday.
The allocation for mosquito control insecticides has increased from Tk45.35 crore in the original FY2025-26 budget. However, the amount was later revised down to Tk30.35 crore.
The FY2026-27 budget also earmarks Tk4 crore for diesel, petrol, oil and lubricants to support mosquito control operations, a category that had no separate allocation in the previous fiscal year's budget.
Another Tk2 crore has been allocated for transportation expenses, including the movement of fogger and wheel spray machines, up from Tk1.5 crore in FY2025-26.
In addition, Tk7.5 crore has been set aside for mosquito control machinery and equipment, compared with Tk2 crore in the revised budget for the previous fiscal year.
In his budget speech, Salam said DSCC had stepped up mosquito control and dengue prevention efforts through regular larviciding in the morning and adulticiding in the afternoon across all wards.
He said mosquito workers and supervisors had received training, while a cross-departmental monitoring team had been formed to ensure mosquito control activities were carried out according to standard procedures.
Salam also said tests conducted by the Ministry of Health found the insecticides currently used by the corporation to be 100% effective. Recommendations from expert teams on alternative insecticides and mosquito control methods were also being implemented regularly, he added.
The administrator said DSCC continued to conduct awareness campaigns through schools and colleges, social media, television commercials, religious institutions and newspaper notices, alongside region-based cleanliness drives involving local public representatives.
"We believe public participation is the greatest tool in preventing dengue," he said.
The Tk4,004.6 crore budget for FY2026-27 was approved at the 14th meeting of the DSCC Governing Committee on July 26.
For FY2025-26, DSCC had originally approved a Tk3,841.38 crore budget, which was later revised to Tk3,138.77 crore.
