Fire at Katabon building leaves 2 dead

Two people died after a fire broke out in two apartments on the 12th floor of a 14-storey residential building in Katabon, Dhaka, early Friday.

The fire was brought under control at 3:08am after six units of the Fire Service worked to extinguish the blaze.

The deceased were identified as Md Johny and Md Abdus Salam.

Rafi Al Faruk, duty officer at the Fire Service's Central Control Room, confirmed the incident.

He said the two victims were rescued with critical burn injuries and taken to separate hospitals. Johny was taken to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, while Abdus Salam was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Doctors at both hospitals declared them dead.

The Fire Service said no one remains trapped inside the building and no additional casualties have been reported.

The cause of the fire could not be determined immediately.
