Nassa Group workers block Mohakhali–Tejgaon road demanding unpaid wages

Around 500 workers of Nasa Group blocked the Mohakhali–Tejgaon road in the capital on Monday, demanding payment of their outstanding wages.

The protest brought traffic to a standstill, causing congestion on surrounding roads.

The workers began the demonstration by occupying the road around 4pm, according to witnesses. The disruption spread to adjacent areas, paralyzing movement during peak hours.

Mahbubur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station, said the factory was closed and the workers have not received one month’s salary.

Police was deployed at the scene to maintain order and are trying to persuade the workers to leave the road, he added.

The OC added that the group’s owners were currently in jail in multiple cases and their assets were seized under court orders.

“At present, there is no representative from the ownership side with whom we can discuss the issue or seek a resolution. We also do not know what assurance we can provide to the workers regarding their unpaid wages as we have no way of contacting the owners. Nevertheless, we are making every effort to bring the situation under control, especially since this is one of the busiest roads in the capital,” he added.
