‘Lack of sincerity behind failure to deliver justice in Sagar-Runi murder’

Journalist leaders have said the failure to deliver justice in the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi reflects a lack of sincerity in the investigation.

They made the remarks at a protest rally organized by Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Monday, demanding justice for the killings.

Speakers said no government so far has shown the willingness to properly investigate the murder. Had there been genuine intent, the case would not have remained unresolved for so long, they added, noting that three successive governments have come to power without any significant progress in ensuring justice.

They also said the deadline for submitting the investigation report has been extended 125 times, adding that it is unclear whether any precedent exists for such repeated delays in a high-profile murder case. According to them, such a situation would not have occurred had there been genuine commitment from the authorities.

The speakers further said a new government is now in place and they hope it will act sincerely to ensure justice. They added that they will submit a memorandum to the government and, if necessary, launch a movement.

They noted that the prolonged delay in delivering justice is not only a disgrace for the journalism community but also a matter of national dignity.

The speakers also said four different agencies have been assigned to investigate the case so far, yet none has submitted a report. The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) is currently handling the case. According to them, the continued failure to deliver justice stems from a lack of sincere effort.

The rally, moderated by DRU General Secretary Mainul Hasan Sohel, was addressed by DRU President Abu Saleh Akon, Maasranga Television Head of News Hamidul Haque, senior member Mashiur Rahman, Training and Research Secretary Mahmud Sohel, former president Sakhawat Hossain Badshah, Office Secretary Rashim Mollah, and leaders of various journalists’ organizations.
