University of Dhaka on Thursday observed the country’s Independence Day and National Day with a series of commemorative programmes, including seminar, wreath-laying ceremony at the National Martyr’s Memorial and special prayers across different faiths.
The day’s observances began at 6:00am on Thursday, with the hoisting of the national flag atop all central buildings, residential halls, and hostels across the campus.
Earlier, at 5:45am, faculty members, students, officers, staff, and alumni gathered at Smriti Chirantan Square and proceeded in a procession to the National Martyrs’ Memorial. The delegation was led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ABM Obaidul Islam, who placed wreaths in honour of the nation’s martyrs.
Following the Zuhr prayers, a special munajat was held at the university’s central mosque Masjidul Jami'a, seeking divine mercy for the souls of the martyred intellectuals. Similar prayers were also offered at places of worship of other faiths. Sweets were distributed among children of university staff families as part of the day’s events.
A cultural programme is scheduled to be held at 6:30pm at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) auditorium, featuring songs, recitations, and dance performances inspired by the spirit of the Liberation War.
As part of the extended observance, a seminar titled “The Significance of the Great Independence and National Day” will be held on Sunday at 11:30am at the TSC auditorium.
The Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ABM Obaidul Islam will chair the session while Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr Sayma Haque Bidisha and Treasurer Professor Dr M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury will attend as guests of honour.
