Sadarghat launch collision: Body recovered after 49 hours

The body of Miraj Fakir, 52, who went missing following a collision between two launches at Sadarghat Launch Terminal in the capital, was recovered by river police after 49 hours.

The body was retrieved around 6:45pm on Friday from a part of the Buriganga River near a salt mill in Keraniganj by personnel of the Barisal River Police outpost.

Police Superintendent of the Dhaka region of River Police, Abdullah Al Mamun, said: “At around 6:45pm, Miraj’s body was recovered from a part of the Buriganga River near the salt mill in Keraniganj. Later, the relatives of the deceased identified the body of Miraj Fakir. The body is currently at the morgue of Mitford Hospital.”

Earlier, on March 18, Sohel, 22, was killed in a collision between two launches at Sadarghat. In the same incident, his pregnant wife, Ruba, was injured and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

On the day of the accident, Miraj was traveling with his son and daughter-in-law in a trawler, heading toward a launch anchored in the middle of the river. At that time, the trawler was caught between the launches “Asha Jaowa-5” on the Dhaka–Ilisha route and “MV Zakir Samrat-3” on the Dhaka–Deula–Ghosherhat route and was crushed.
