The mother of a Dhaka University student who was beaten on suspicion of being a Chhatra League member has filed a formal complaint against several university students at Shahbagh Police Station.
Pavel's mother, Parveen Akhter, submitted the complaint on Monday night, which was received by the station's Officer-in-Charge Md Moniruzzaman.
According to the complaint, the victim — Rahid Khan Pavel, a student of the Philosophy department (2020–21 session) at Dhaka University — had headed out on his motorcycle around 3am on Monday to have sehri. On his way, he was intercepted near the Shaheed Minar adjacent to the Buet campus, within the jurisdiction of Shahbagh Police Station.
The complaint names Saifullah, Hasib Al Islam, Saeed Afridi, Riyad Mal, Sardar Nadim Shuvo, Md Sakib, Forkan Uddin Mohi, Bayzid Hasan, Himel, and Sanjib Hossain, along with 10 to 15 unidentified individuals, as the attackers — who allegedly descended on Pavel in a group, armed with locally made weapons, iron rods, steel pipes, and sticks.
The complaint states that when Saifullah attempted to strike Pavel on the head with an iron rod, Pavel tried to block the blow with his hand, fracturing a finger in the process. Hasib Al Islam then struck him from behind, aiming for his head, but hitting his left ear instead — leaving him seriously injured. Other accused reportedly struck him across various parts of his body with rods and pipes.
Pavel attempted to flee, but was chased down and beaten again in front of SM Hall. At some point, several of the attackers allegedly took his mobile phone, five thousand taka in cash from his wallet, his motorcycle key, and his ATM card.
Later, a rickshaw puller found Pavel injured and brought him to the front of Shahbagh Police Station — where he was reportedly beaten yet again. Police eventually rescued him and, with the assistance of Dhaka University's Proctorial Team, sent him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Officers at Shahbagh Police Station confirmed that the complaint has been accepted, and that the matter will be investigated with appropriate legal action to follow.
